

Carl Thomas “Tom” Simo, age 78, of South Lyon, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026. He was born on October 29, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, to Carl A. and Gloria N. Simo. Tom loved God and proudly served his country for many years. He entered the United States Army directly out of high school and served from 1965 to 1968. Following his active-duty service, he continued his military commitment in the U.S. Army Reserve and also served in both the United States Air Force and the National Guard.
After his military service, Tom pursued higher education with dedication and determination. He attended Schoolcraft College and Madonna University before earning his master’s degree in business from Central Michigan University. His passion for education led him to a long and meaningful career as a professor at Schoolcraft College, where he primarily taught business classes. Over the years, he influenced and mentored countless students. His students nominated him for the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence at Schoolcraft College. He felt very honored. He thought it was a good feeling to know that he made a difference in so many peoples lives. Tom retired in May 2025 after many years of devoted service to his students and the college community.
He also built a successful career in the automotive industry, serving as a senior manager buyer. His work took him around the world, where he collaborated with suppliers on a global level. Known for his strong leadership and negotiation skills, he played an important role in securing new programs and accounts. During his career, he successfully negotiated cost reductions that saved one of the companies he worked for more than $14 million, leaving a lasting impact through his dedication and expertise.
He faithfully served for over 14 years as Vice Commander and Assistant Director of the American Legion Riders at his local post. During that time, he was deeply committed to supporting fellow veterans, especially those returning home from wartime assignments, helping them transition back to civilian life and ensuring they knew they were not alone.
Tom married Laura , in 1992, and together they built a life filled with lasting memories. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Simo; his children, Anthony (Linnie) Simo, Cynthia (Gordon) Lietz, and Thomas Simo; and his cherished grandchildren: Anthony (Alyssa), Zachary (Lindsay), Hailey (Joshua), Brittney (Stetson), Tyler, Alexis, Nikolas, Grayson, Mila, Dylan, and Diana (Chris). Tom was also a proud great-grandfather to Emma, Ethan, Bentley, Briella, Stella, Cason, Christopher, and Nickolaus, with two more great-grandchildren on the way. He is also survived by his brother, Michael (Deb) Simo, and his sister, Mary.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Carl A. and Gloria N. Simo, and his brother, John Simo.
Outside of his professional life, Tom enjoyed many simple pleasures. He loved playing golf and treasured time spent at family gatherings. Many years ago, he started a special tradition with his children that eventually extended to his great-grandchildren - visiting the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village. For decades, Christmas Eve morning was always spent together there, creating memories that became a cherished part of his family.
He also held fond memories of traveling to Italy to visit his family’s hometown, where his grandparents were raised.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Tom's family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and again on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 am. An entombment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
