Clay was our neighbor and my hubby and I met him and his wife a few years ago at a block party (hosted by our next door neighbors, Ken and Gail).

It was obvious he had a passion for dogs, just like me, and we started chatting. I soon learned that he was long time friends with Judy and Dick Huston (a couple of very dear friends of ours). I couldn't help but instantly take a liking to Clay.

I miss seeing him as I drive by his home evey day. As I send him hugs on this day, I know he has received them.

Clay was my buddy when we both worked in Personnel Benefits at Ford in the 70s. My husband, Dick, was the Personnel Director of our staff and became a friend to Clay over the years. Years after I left Ford, we became reconnected when Clay heard my name mentioned when people at one of his block parties in his neighborhood were having a conversation about dogs and Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer. I had invited Cesar to Michigan to do a seminar for our breed. After that, Clay and one of his daughters came to Howell to a Nature Center event that we attended with them. Clay came to one of our White Shepherd fundraisers. And, just like when we were in Personnel Benefits, Clay was the one I turned to for answers about medical insurance--my gosh did he help us out. We still have the best plan out there because of Clay's guidance. Periodically we would touch base, and although I knew he was fighting an illness, I believed (wanted to believe) it wouldn't claim him for a long time.

What I know for sure is that he adored his family and loved dogs. Way back in the Ford days, he helped out a neighbor who needed to place a Sheltie called Taffy. We took Taffy and raised her with our German Shepherd, Tasha. Clay would always ask how Taffy was doing. I loved the pictures of him with his dog--warmed my heart. Clay lived well and he was well loved by all of us who had the privilege of getting to know him.

Clay was one of the finest and most decent human beings it has been my privilege to call a friend. I will miss our conversations at St. John’s and on the telephone. It is not often in this life that one knows and admires a gentleman (in the truest meaning of the word) such as Clay.

May the Good Lord keep Clay in His Grace, and may He provide comfort to his family.

Simply put, Clay was always a gentleman. Enjoyed our conversations about the Air Force and running.
