

Daniel Francis “Danny Boy” McCarty, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. Dan was born and raised in Southwest Detroit. He served in the US Army from 1954-1956 where he was stationed in Germany as a Morse code radio operator during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he met the love of his life, Patti, at a Holy Redeemer High School football game. They married at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on September 21, 1957.
Dan and Patti were blessed with 4 children, Timothy, Kathleen, Jane & Mary Ann. He began his career as a Police Officer with the Detroit Police Department in 1959. He retired as a Detective Sergeant in the Homicide division. Dan received the Distinguished Recognition Award in 1972 as well as numerous keys to the City of Detroit for his great service. Following his retirement he worked for J.W. Cole & Sons, where he traveled to many destinations in the U.S. overseeing the internal operations of the International Auto Shows. After his second retirement, Dan worked at landmark establishments around Detroit such as Comerica Park, Joe Louis Arena and Detroit Medical Center, as a security guard.
Dan, always the life of any party, nearly perfected living in the moment. He was best known for telling a story or two at any occasion, and never knew a stranger.
Dan is survived by his 3 loving daughters, Kathleen (Robert) Smythe, Jane (Jim) Browne, Mary Ann (Jim) Peters; sister, Ellen Wright and sister-in-law, Mary Jane McCarty; grandchildren, Christina (Richard) Rykens, Alexis Hiles, Sean Hiles, Alec Smythe, Devin Smythe, Christopher Besonen, Daniel Peters, Megan (Kevin) LaHaie, Molly Kalep, Maria Kalep, Caitlyn (Austin) Hogan. Loving Great Papa of Caroline Rykens, Paul Rykens, Maggie Dixon, Connor Kifer, and Justin Besonen.
In addition to his parents, Dan was pre-deceased by his wife, Patti; son, Timothy; brothers, Kevin and Paul McCarty; brother-in-law Patrick Wright; and granddaughter, Lindsey Browne.
Friends and family may visit on Friday, August 27, 2021 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 West Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Visitation continues on Saturday morning, also at the funeral home, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 10:00 a.m.
