David was the youngest of four children, born to Gunther and Kazuko (Oshima) Hagen. He loved playing sports, and baseball was his passion. One of his favorite things to eat was cream puffs from Marie’s Donuts, and he liked going to Lou’s Burgers. He graduated from Highlands High School, and earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Sacramento State University.
In his late twenties he moved to the east coast and began working in retail management. He lived in many places over the following years, finally landing in Michigan in 1994 where he began his career with Bed Bath and Beyond. David met Ruth at work and they married in 2001. He loved dogs, music and food and being at the cottage with his jet skis and boats. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
On June 17, 2020, David was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. The prognosis was grim with only a year or less to live. The cancer was in his pancreas, liver and lungs and his body was riddled with blood clots and pain. The four months that followed were filled with doctors, hospitals and treatments. It was also filled with visitors, connecting with friends over the phone, and as much joy as he could find. But finally he could fight no longer and left us at 1:43 on October 19, 2020.
David was preceded in death by his father, Gunther. He is survived by his wife Ruth of 19 years, his mother Kazuko, his siblings Peter (Judi) Hagen, Jeannette Hagen, Jennifer Lamb, his four children Grace (Jason) Cocking, Jackie (Andy) Nipper, David (Jennifer) Hagen, Alex (Stephenie) Hagen and his beloved grandchildren Jackson, Dustin and Marla. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
