In 1998, Desmond met the love of his life, Lora. They were married in 2002 and built a life rooted in partnership, laughter, and shared passions. Their daughter, Leyla, was born in 2010 and became a central joy in their life.
A graduate of Mackenzie High School, Desmond dedicated 30 years to his career as a veterinary technician, serving at Veterinary Emergency Services and Caputo Animal Hospital. His compassion for animals was evident in every aspect of his life, both professional and personal, as he cared for countless creatures over the years. His work reflected his patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to animal welfare, qualities that defined him and earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike.
Desmond had a deep love for the outdoors and found his greatest peace in nature. He enjoyed boating, riding his motorcycle, fishing, and hunting, and his adventurous spirit was unmistakable. He could often be found unicycling through the Metroparks or capturing scenic landscapes with his drone—always full of life, always quick to laugh, with a laughter so contagious it lifted everyone around him.
He took pride in living close to the land, tending gardens, raising turkeys, chickens, and rabbits, caring for his beehives, and even making his own soap. For Desmond, these passions were never just hobbies; they were meaningful ways to spend time with his wife, Lora, and daughter, Leyla. Through every creative idea and every wild adventure, Lora and Leyla were right there with him—supportive, present, and always along for the ride. His greatest adventure, and the one he cherished most, was the life he built with them.
Desmond also had a refined palate and delighted in exploring unique and exotic foods.
He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his devotion to his family, his dedication as a provider, his loyalty as a friend, and his deep passion for nature and animals. Desmond will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Desmond is survived by his loving wife, Lora; his father, Gerald (Emma); his step-sister, Carol (Winston); his son, Deon (Cherelle); his daughter, Leyla; and his grandchildren, Dakota, Dream, and Genesis. He is also remembered by his aunts and uncles: Martha, Jessica, Chuckie (Shauna), Fulton, and Jeremiah (Eunice).
He was preceded in death by his mother, Brenda Freeman, and his grandparents, Ruby Freeman, Homer and Labora Ledbetter.
