Doris was born on February 22, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, to Frank and Meta Berlin. Raised in a loving Lutheran home, the Christian faith her parents instilled in her remained the foundation of her life.
In 1951, Doris married Richard Maxwell, and together they built a loving family until his passing in 1983. Through a friend at church, Doris was blessed to find love again and married Howard Kaiser in 1988. They shared many happy years together until Howard's passing in 2007.
Doris was the beloved mother of Rick (Debbie) Maxwell and Sandra Maxwell, and a devoted stepmother to Janet Kaiser. She was the cherished grandmother of Stacey (Steve) Shade and Melissa (Dave McElwaine) Maxwell, and the proud great-grandmother of Lydia and Josie Shade. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law, Marilyn Gunter, along with a host of loving nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Meta Berlin; her husbands, Richard Maxwell and Howard Kaiser; and her brothers, Ray, Stan, and Ernie Berlin.
A woman of simple pleasures and unwavering faith, Doris found great joy in her church family. She was a longtime and faithful member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, where she found fellowship, comfort, and purpose throughout her life. Her faith guided her daily and remained one of her greatest sources of strength.
Doris also enjoyed cheering on her beloved Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers, celebrating every victory and faithfully supporting her hometown teams through every season. In recent years, she found friendship, comfort, and a true sense of home within the caring community at Brookside Assisted Living, where she treasured the relationships she built and the kindness she received.
Above all, Doris will be remembered for her gentle spirit, steadfast faith, and the love she shared with her family and friends. Her quiet strength and gracious heart leave a lasting legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. at Harry J. Will Funeral Home. Doris will be laid to rest on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Doris' honor to Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, a congregation that meant so much to her throughout her life.
