

Gene G. Nuechterlein passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 27, 2015, following a brief illness at the age of 87. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 10, 2015, from 5-8 p.m. at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile, Livonia, MI (just east of I-275 and Newburgh Road). The funeral Service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 30650 Six Mile Road, Livonia, MI, and the family will meet with friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service begins.
Gene was born in Wisconsin to Rev. Walter and Edna Nuechterlein. He was married for nearly 60 years to his beloved wife Shirley, who predeceased him in 2010. Gene and Shirley raised three children – Paul (Ellen) Nuechterlein, Donna (Tim) Stephan, and David (Tina) Nuechterlein. In addition to his children, Gene leaves behind his loving grandchildren Amanda Stephan, Peter Stephan (fiancée Michelle Kloempken), Jacob (Vanessa), Eric, Joel (Allison Anderson), Matthew (Erin), Joshua, Hilton, and Terry Nuechterlein. He was the dear brother of James (Dot) Nuechterlein, Lynn (Burt, deceased) Biesenthal, and the late Kay Nuechterlein. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
After spending his early years in rural Wisconsin with neither electricity nor plumbing in his family’s modest country home, Gene’s parents relocated to Detroit, where his father served as organist at historic Trinity Lutheran Church. This is where he first met his wife Shirley. Shortly after turning 18, Gene was drafted into the U.S. Army forcing him to leave college after just one semester. Following an honorable discharge, he enrolled in Wayne State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. Gene worked his entire career for Westinghouse Electric Supply Company (WESCO).
Gene and Shirley were members Faith Lutheran Church in Livonia for over 50 years. Gene will be laid to rest privately alongside his beloved wife Shirley in the Faith Lutheran Church Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made in Gene’s name to “Faith Lutheran Organ Fund” c/o Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Hospice of the Valley (hov.org), or Food for the Hungry (fh.org).
