OBITUARY

George Philip LaBerge

October 7, 1933October 9, 2021

George Philip LaBerge, age 88, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021 after a valiant fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

Beloved husband of Loretta for 64 wonderful years. Loving father of Catherine, Mark (Brenda), David (Linda) and Jerome (Lisa). Cherished grandfather of Rebecca (Brian Chaney), Lindsay (Christopher McKenzie), Andrew (Marie) LaBerge, Sarah (Ethan Dome), Alex (Rachel) LaBerge, Eric LaBerge, Nicholas (Jennifer) LaBerge, Joseph LaBerge. Great grandfather of Lillian Chaney, Elora Chaney, Mia LaBerge, Allison LaBerge, Savannah McKenzie, Palmer McKenzie and Olivia Dome. Dearest brother of Carol Munson.

Predeceased in death by sisters Yvonne (Russell) Wearn, Albertha (Donald) Lilley, Mary Deloris (John) Nolan, Jeanne (James) Hewson and infant brother, Eugene.

George graduated from St. Francis DeSalle High School in Detroit, Michigan and attended college at University of Detroit until he enlisted in the U.S. Army to proudly serve our country during the Korean war. His VFW Korean War ball cap was a regular part of his “daily attire”. He started his career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1952 until his retirement in 1989 as Manager of Customer Services. He was a devout lifelong Catholic. During retirement, he and Loretta spent many years performing their civic duty as Election Inspectors in the City of Livonia.

George was the consummate handyman (have toolbox, will travel), providing services to friends and family over the years as well as almost ten years with Habitat for Humanity and volunteering at Greenfield Village. He loved to “garage sale” and attend flea markets with Loretta. While the children were young, family vacations were camping around our great state of Michigan, especially in his parent’s birthplace of East Tawas, Michigan. During his retirement years, he and Loretta took many trips including travel throughout the United States, Ireland, England and Canada. George was an avid reader and very much enjoyed the daily newspaper. He loved dogs, especially all his grand-dogs!

To the Laberge family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Phil was truly one of the good dads. May he rest in peace. He is no longer suffering and am betting he's on God's A-Team of craftsman!

When I think of Uncle Philip I think of "tinkering", fixing things he found curbside, his work with Habitat for Humanity, all his help with Russell at his assisted living home and how much my children enjoyed his magic tricks and the attention he gave them at family gatherings.
My condolences to all.

Jerry,

I'm sorry to hear of your dad's passing. My prayers and condolences go out to you and your entire family. I fondly remember the few different times I bumped into him around town. Though I really only saw him a handful of times, he talked to me like he had known me for years. Such a pleasant man. And of course I can't forget the time when I needed one last piece of wood to finish the trim on my deck...and he came through.

Rest in peace, Mr. LaBerge.

Philly you were a part of my life almost as long as my own father. You were the best father in law a girl could ask for. You were loved so much and will be missed deeply, but we will see each other again. Until that day RIP❤❤

Dad -
We had a special relationship with my being your first child and only daughter. You taught me so much about parenting, careers, home ownership and finances. I especially enjoyed our morning coffee and cinnamon donuts while we chatted about the news. I’ll miss that morning time with you but I know you’ll be enjoying your coffee and a cinnamon treat in heaven. Love you!
