Gertrude Lillian Pate passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on November 4, 2019. She was known by many names, including: Lil, Gert, Mom, Grandma, and most importantly, Little Darlin’. Lil was a spirited, funny, and ornery woman. Her Kentucky roots not only inspired her love of southern food, but also her unique drawl on words like: “warsh”, “Franch dressing”, and “ah loooove you”. She loved going to thrift stores, garage sales, Walmart, and the nail salon. She had a collection of silver spoons from places traveled, teacups, plates, numerous knick knacks, sewing machines, toys, games, and other “things” she didn’t even know she had. You could often find her singing to her grandkids, playing card games or sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee. While these were some of her favorite things, the best gift she ever received was the love of her husband of 62 years. Together, the two of them built a life, and a family, they were proud of. Their love was, and will forever be envied by all who knew them.

Lil’s smile, jokes, and constant desire for back scratches will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Foy Pate; her children, Charlie Pate, Teresia Salliotte, Dennis (Lori) Pate, and Renee (Greg) Krzyzanowski; her daughter-in-law, Linda Pate; her grandchildren, Michelle (Andy) French, Jennifer (Mike) Zandstra, Natalie Perry, Megan (Tom) Burke, Caitlin Salliotte, Nathan McMahan, Denny Pate, Rachel Salliotte, Elizabeth McMahan, Marissa Pate, Kimberly Krzyzanowski, and Gregory Krzyzanowski; her great-grandchildren, Justin, Noelle, Lawson, Corinne, Lilly, Mycha, Kyah, David, Charlotte, Maci, Ava, and Estrella; her siblings, Joyce Lang, Timothy Smith, and Leatrice Beckett; her sister-in-law, Jean Smith; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Emmett Smith, Phyllis Redmond, Larry Smith, and Margaret Hooper; and her grandson, Gregory Stokes.

A visitation will be held Friday, November 8, 2019 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Gateway Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 11:00am at the church. Burial will take place at Michigan Memorial Park.

Gramma,

I had a million memories I could have shared on Saturday, but there simply was not enough time in the world to encapsulate the woman you were to me.
Every Christmas, every homecoming, every tournament, every chorus season, every moment that I needed support, you were there.
The memories of your terrible driving, messy car, peanut butter crackers and oatmeal pies will be things I hope I can one day share with my family.
You promised me you would be the flower girl in my wedding one day, and while it breaks my heart to know that will never happen, my heart is so very happy that you are at peace.
I will miss your laugh, your jokes and the way you always made my papa know he was loved.
Thank you for being a wonderful example, friend and most importantly, the best grandma I could have ever asked for.
I will miss you more than I can ever describe.

Rest in eternal peace, Aunt Lil...your quips always made me laugh and I have many fond memories of our Smith reunions. Give my Grandpa a big hug for me. ❤️

Pate Family
I have known your family all of my life. I have many memories of Foy and Lil cutting up with each other and everyone else. I remember sitting by Lil in church when she was pregnant with Renee. When I think of Lil I think of a warm, loving and funny lady who would help anyone she could. I consider your family as my family. Foy, I know you will miss your sweetheart; just remember there are a lot of people who love you and are praying for you

Love,
Anita and John Clauss

Wrong place, wrong time: Carl Jr. had a toy rubber snake. He came in Granny Pate's back door at the house in TN. Aunt Lil was sitting in Granny's chair. Carl snuck in and laid the snake over the back of the chair and over her shoulder. Aunt Lil looked up at Carl, saw the snake on her shoulder, jumped out of the chair screaming, ran all the way through the house to the back bedroom and was found crying. Being a little boy, Carl felt bad because he thought she didn't like him anymore. After a few hours she came out of the room and gave him a hug. Carl had fond memories going to their house in Wyandotte and then picking up candy or coke at the nearby store. Her catch phrase for Carl was "I'll get you boy!" She was always funny, and was fun to be around. We will miss her dearly.

I remember seeing Lil in her her long johns when I was waiting on Theresa to go to school I used to think that was crazy, but now I understand. I am so sorry I broke Theresa’s nose from running into her while running around the house in different directions. Love you all

I knew Lil and Foy many years ago. The last memory I have of them Lil was sitting on my couch in Nolensville, Tn. . She was bringing me up to date on all the family. She was a very loving, outgoing person and I am glad I had her in my life.

The loss of a mother is devastating. I’m sorry for your loss.

Aunt Lil was my second momma when I was little. Loved her and loved being with her except when she’d clean my ears with a bobby pin 😬🤣
