Jim proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed at China Lake, California. Following his military service, he worked for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Jim enjoyed an active and adventurous life. He had a passion for photography, riding his motorcycle, and traveling. Motorcycle riding held a special place in his heart, bringing back happy memories of his grandmother, Lavina Lobdell, who taught him how to ride. Of all his travels, Jim especially enjoyed journeys by train and cruises, where he could sit back, take in the scenery, and enjoy the experience along the way. He loved the excitement of exploring somewhere new, meeting people from all walks of life, and making connections wherever his adventures took him.
He also enjoyed joking with friends and playing card games, sharing laughter and good times with those around him. Jim was protective of the people he cared about and looked out for those who held a special place in his life. When his daughter was younger, he enjoyed helping coach her sports teams and being involved in her activities. He also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Maddi, who brought companionship and joy to his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Dorotha Carlson; his father, Robert Carlson; and his stepmother, Edna Carlson.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Chris (Christine) Carlson; his daughter, Shauna Carlson, from a previous marriage; his stepsons, David and Michael Merchant; his granddaughter, Chloe Carlson-Smith; and his sisters, Marcia Lipps of Muskegon, Michigan, and Myrna Arndt of Jefferson, Georgia.
Jim will be remembered for his service to his country, his years of work with the state of Michigan, his adventurous spirit, his sense of humor, and the meaningful connections he made throughout his life. The memories he cherished, the laughter he shared, and the care he showed for the people and animals he loved will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
