James was born on August 30, 1933, to his loving parents, Simeon and Tsveta Papadopoulos, in Trsye, Greece (Macedonia). At a young age, he immigrated to Windsor, Canada, where he began building the foundation of a life filled with hard work, love, and devotion to his family.
In 1956, James met the love of his life, Sophie, who had also immigrated from their same village to Detroit, Michigan. The two shared a beautiful love story and went on to enjoy 61 wonderful years of marriage before Sophie’s passing.
James was the beloved husband of the late Sophie Papas. He was the loving father of Kathy (Chris) Dimitriou, Victoria Kouzikas, and Steven Papas. He was a cherished Dedo to Kristi (Cory) Maurer, Jim (Katie) Dimitriou, Dimitri, Steven, and Christian Kouzikas, and Sofia Papas. He was a proud great-grandfather to Avery and Caden Maurer, and Colette and Charlie Dimitriou.
James was preceded in death by his siblings, Tona, Vasil, and Dan (Marie). He is survived by his sister-in-law, Sophie, and was a dear uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A talented chef with a passion for his craft, James successfully owned and operated several restaurants throughout Michigan. His work ethic and dedication were admired by many, but above all, James was a simple man who found his greatest joy in his family. They were the center of his world, and he treasured every moment spent together. He especially enjoyed family trips to Northern Michigan, creating memories that will forever be cherished.
James was a longtime and faithful parishioner of St. Clement of Ohrid Orthodox Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a hardworking man, and someone whose greatest accomplishment was the family he built and the love he shared with them.
