James Michael Sullivan

James Michael Sullivan—known affectionately to family and friends as Mike, Mickey, or Mick—passed away peacefully on September 3, 2026, at the age of 85. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and man of steadfast faith, Mike leaves behind a legacy defined by selfless generosity, hard work, and unconditional love for his family.

Born in Amarillo, Texas, on July 29, 1941, to the late James and Virginia Sullivan, Mike spent his formative years in Denver, Colorado. His lifelong commitment to personal discipline and academic excellence began at Regis Jesuit High School. He went on to proudly earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame—a milestone that sparked a lifelong allegiance to the Fighting Irish—and later completed his Master of Business Administration at the University of Denver.

Armed with sharp business acumen and an unwavering work ethic, Mike embarked on a distinguished 37-year career with Ford Motor Company. Rising through the ranks into numerous senior leadership roles, he earned the enduring respect of colleagues for his integrity, sound judgment, and mentorship. Through his example, he instilled in his children the value of diligence, perseverance, and honest effort, serving as a true role model in every facet of his life.

Mike’s faith was the bedrock of his life. A devout Catholic, he was an active parishioner at St. Colette Catholic Church in Livonia, Michigan, where he regularly attended Mass. Guided by his faith and his own life’s journey, Mike placed immense value on education. In one of his most profound acts of generosity, he made countless personal sacrifices to ensure that every single one of his children and grandchildren could graduate from college with their undergraduate degrees completely free of debt—a transformative gift that will echo through generations.

Above all, Mike was a family man. He shared a beautiful, enduring bond with his beloved wife, Patti. When her health declined, Mike devoted himself tirelessly to her care, standing by her side with extraordinary tenderness and dedication until her passing in 2018. While he felt deeply lost without his life partner, he found solace and strength leaning into the warmth, love, and support of his cherished friends, children, and grandchildren. Nothing brought a brighter spark to Mick’s eye than his family—if you wanted to see him truly light up, all you had to do was ask about his grandkids, and his face would beam with pure joy and pride.

Mike was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Patti Sullivan; his parents, James and Virginia; and his brothers, Ray Sullivan (Barbara) and Pat Sullivan (Gene).

His legacy will continue to live on through his three loving children and their spouses: Colleen (Tom) Brzezinski, Kathy (Kurt) Hein, and Tim Sullivan (Elliott); his seven adored grandchildren: Adam, Erin, Jack, Nathan, Nick, Alyssa, and Addie; and his three precious great-grandchildren: Cora, Emma, and Brody, as well as extended family, former colleagues, and many dear lifelong friends.
