He was the loving father of Irene (Elefterios) Kaplantzes and Steve (Pamela) Vlahakis. Beloved Papouli of Steven, Alexandra, and Madeline Kaplantzes. Dear brother of George (Connie) Vlahakis and Irene (Dimitri) Karakis.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in passing by his wife, Magda, and his sister, Marika (Costas) Byrakis.
James was born and raised in Greece and proudly served in their army. He immigrated to the United States in the early 1960s and married Magda in May 1964. He opened a restaurant in Ann Arbor shortly after his arrival. Following this endeavor, he opened his commercial painting business, which he owned and operated for over 50 years.
James' favorite thing in life was spending time with his cherished wife, Magda. They enjoyed traveling, their favorite trips being cruises down to Florida and playing the slots at the casino. They were a social couple and loved to partake in good food with good company. One of the things he was best known for was his storytelling. From person to person, they'd never know which version they would receive- often to his wife's dismay. He was also fond of gardening and classic cars.
