Janet Marie Pauli was born on October 28, 1944 at Old Providence Hospital on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan. Her parents were Frank George Pauli and Virginia Dorothy Teats, and their home was located at 12311 Tuller in that same city. She was baptized on the 15th of November 1944 at St Cecilia Catholic Church. Her sponsors were John Patrick Teats and Mary Delores Teats.
In 1948 Janet and her four siblings moved to 19470 Stahlin Street in Detroit where she attended Pitcher Elementary School during her kindergarten year. In 1950 the family moved to 222 West Street, Three Rivers, Michigan where Janet attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School for her first two years of elementary education.
The last move the family would make took place in September 1952. With seven children and one cocker spaniel they embarked on their journey to 508 Gardner Avenue, Northville, Michigan. It was here that Janet spent her youth in this small town that had a population of 3,200 in 1950. She attended Our Lady of Victory Elementary School and then went on to Ladywood High School located in Livonia.
At the University of Detroit at McNichols and Livernois she met her future husband, Nick (Harold) Bickner. They were married on May 13,1967 and after his military service was complete, the couple settled in Northville where their beautiful daughters Carrie and Susan were born in 1970 and 1972. Janet and Nick were married for 54 years at the time of Nick’s passing.
While her children were in high school, Janet completed her College degree at Eastern Michigan University and in 1994 she started teaching in the Novi Community School District at Novi Woods Elementary. She taught second and third grades.
Nothing was so near and dear to her heart as were her grandchildren: Ava, George, Brendan and Brooklyn. Both Janet and Nick found unexpected joy with these dear children. However, as families moved from place to place, the now retired Janet and Nick moved to Arizona to enjoy the sunshine. It was here that Nick passed away July 25, 2021 from ALS. Janet then moved back to Northville
Janet is survived by her daughters, Carrie Bickner and Susan Bickner Hoy; four grandchildren: George Hoy, Brendan Hoy, Christopher (Brooklyn) Hoy and Ava Zeldman. Siblings are Carolyn Nieuwkoop, Frank Pauli (Julie Keller), Maureen Pauli, John Pauli (Sharon Smith), Steve Pauli (Susan Mauland), Mary Joanne Pauli and sister Mary Suzanne Pauli who preceded her in death having died on April 24, 1953.
Her last few months were spent with her daughter, Susan, while she received the most excellent care from her nurse Jordan and her social worker, Katherine from Angela Home Hospital Care. Her final day was with the loving hospice care workers from Angela Care Center in Livonia. Her family will remain forever grateful for the care and comfort Janet received.
