Jean was vibrant, nurturing, and the embodiment of a beautiful heart. She cared deeply for everyone around her, family, friends, or strangers. You could always count on her to check in and make sure you were okay. Jean was proud of her Scottish heritage, having been born in Scotland before coming to the United States in 1953.
Jean worked at Henry Ford Hospital and General Motors before joining her family business, Metropolitan Diesel Supply, in 1978. She dedicated many years to the company until her retirement in 2006.
On July 9, 1970, Jean married the love of her life, Philip Winteringham, in Dewsbury, England. A few months later, they began their life together in the United States. Jean and Philip shared a deep, unwavering love, and now they are reunited once again.
Jean was the embodiment of a “Proverbs 31 Woman”. She was very active in their church, Curtis Gospel Chapel. She loved the Lord Jesus and to share of His goodness and eternal promises. Jean helped lead the chosen hymns with singing when Philip played the piano at Curtis Chapel.
Jean had many hobbies and passions. She was always baking cookies or brownies or her delicious “Scottish Shortbread” or a quiche for the “coffee hour”. She loved gardening and was exceptionally crafty, she enjoyed knitting and often gifted friends and even strangers with little wreaths she created. She also knitted pink and blue baby hats for the maternity ward of local hospitals. Jean was a talented sewer, an avid reader, and loved taking trips to the library.
She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed traveling, but she especially cherished time spent with her family and friends. After retiring, she found great joy in lake life with her husband and family, feeding the swans by the water and the squirrels and birds at home. Jean had a heart for animals. Love of stray dogs and furry friends. She fed her squirrels by hand when they came to the window for a treat.
Jean and Philip would practice the hymns for Sunday morning and would call friends the night before to minister in song to lift others up with God’s love. She and Philip would practice together, her singing and him accompanying on the accordion or piano. Jean made it her mission to call seniors, family, and friends every day just to check on them and remind them they mattered. She never met a stranger and loved with her whole heart, fiercely and without condition.
To cherish her memory, Jean leaves behind her daughter, Stacey (Jim) Hickey; her grandchildren, Jacob Winteringham, Brian Hickey, and Olivia Dasovic (née Hickey); her brothers, Alastair McAlees and Raymond McAlees; and her sister-in-law, Joan Browne.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Philip, and her son, Todd Winteringham.
The world became a bit dimmer when Jean left it, but those who loved her take comfort in knowing she is reunited with her husband and son once more.
God be with you till we meet again
