John Thomas Kiefer

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962 aboard the USS John Paul Jones. Following his honorable service, he returned home and built a long and respected career as a building engineer. He dedicated nearly 30 years to the Detroit Public School System before retiring.

One of the greatest blessings of John's life began with a blind date on January 8, 1960, when he met the love of his life, Joan. During John's final years in the Navy, the two faithfully wrote letters to one another, building a lasting foundation for their future together. Joan lovingly preserved their courtship in a scrapbook, keeping the letters that told the story of their growing love. They were married and shared many wonderful years together until Joan's passing on June 5, 2023. Their marriage was one of devotion, companionship, and countless cherished memories.

John embraced retirement with gratitude and joy. His family affectionately described him as a "no schedule" kind of person, someone who appreciated life's simple pleasures and enjoyed taking each day as it came. He loved traveling, especially the many casino trips to Las Vegas that he and Joan enjoyed together over the years. He treasured spending time with his family, valued the friendships he shared with his neighbors, and took great pride in his community.

Among John's most treasured memories in recent years were the simple moments spent with his son, Craig—reminiscing about Joan, family, and friends. Those conversations became a meaningful part of his life and reflected the deep bond they shared. For John, there was no greater joy than simply being with Craig, whose presence filled his life with love and purpose.

John is survived by his son, Craig (Gwen) Kiefer; his granddaughters, Emily (Dan) Kaminski and Hannah Kiefer; and his sister, Mary Kiefer.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Kiefer; his son, John T. Kiefer Jr.; his parents, John and Molly (Masich) Kiefer; and his sisters, Kathy and Sue.

John will be remembered for his quiet strength, steadfast dedication to his family, and his appreciation for life's everyday moments. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for those closest to him leave a legacy that will continue to be cherished by all who knew him.

In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation will take place. No public memorial services have been scheduled at this time.
