I'm so happy I was able to know Joe, if even only for a short 10 years. A true gentleman, family man, gifted teacher and musician. He has left a positive influence on many, including myself, on how to keep your priorities in order and how to do things the right way. All my best to his lovely wife Audrey and his family.
Love, John Waling

I am sorry for your loss of one of the nices men I have known. We taught at West for many years. He was always happy and loved teaching instrumental music.

His bubbly personality was infectious to everyone. I have not seen him for many years, but thought of him often.

Biography

Joseph A. Buono (1929-2018)

Mr. Buono attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit studying the French Horn, and began playing music locally immediately upon graduation. In 1950 he married his high school sweetheart Audrey and they eventually had 3 children together. In 1951 Joe enlisted in the Air Force and was assigned to the 596th Air Force Band in Newfoundland, Canada. Following his service he received a Master’s Degree in Education at Wayne State University. Joe took the job as musical director at Taylor West Jr. High School in 1967 and taught there for nearly 20 years before retiring. His band was awarded numerous Division I rankings at state festivals and actually recorded an album in 1974 and again in 1976. Besides teaching, Joe recorded original songs with many recording artists and Motown legends including Barry White’s “Love Theme,” Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life” and Marvin Gaye’s “Aint No Mountain High Enough.” He also played in hundreds of musical productions touring in Detroit at the Fisher Theatre and Masonic Temple, as well as playing for countless performers at DTE Music Energy Theatre (formerly Pine Knob).
