Kenneth Meryl Schmidt, age 94, of Woodhaven Retirement Community, Livonia, Michigan, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2020. He was born September 1, 1925 in Hammond, Indiana to the late Arthur and Johanna (Broertjes) Schmidt. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Alberta (Augustine) Schmidt of Livonia; children Kathy (Bill) Weaver of Redford, MI, Karen (Dan) Rose of Commerce, MI, and Greg (Angie) Schmidt of Redford, MI; grandchildren Matthew (Karen), Courtney, Hannah, Andy, and Meghan; and brother Arnold (Ann) Schmidt of Hammond, IN.
Ken was a graduate of Hammond High School and began his career in the business office of American Steel Foundry but quickly moved to the Continental Baking Company which included Wonder Bread and Hostess Cakes, both in Hammond. His work led him to residences in Stow, Ohio and Livonia, Michigan. He advanced in his career to become an internal auditor and retired after 39 years of dedicated service to Continental. After retirement, he and Alberta moved to northern Michigan to enjoy life at a lake home in Gladwin. He loved vegetable gardening, fishing, woodworking, golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He and Alberta were also long-time residents of Henry Ford Village, Dearborn, MI. Ken was a life-long, faithful Christian and a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Dearborn. He lived a life of service to others and frequently volunteered his time and talents.
A private gravesite service will be held for immediate family. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church at a future date.
