Lloyd was born June 24, 1937 in Detroit to William and Edith Ruhlig Schultz. He was baptized July 25, 1937 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Detroit and confirmed April 2, 1950 in the same congregation. He attended St. Stephen and Lutheran High School in Detroit and then received his BS Degree in Education from Concordia College, River Forest. Later, he earned his Masters in Education from Wayne State University.
Lloyd and Pat were married June 26, 1960 and have been blessed with a great family. There are five children; John Schultz, Philip (Laura) Schultz, Jim (Christine) Schultz, Susan (David) Rutter, and Paul Schultz; and nine grandchildren; Thomas (Cailie) Schultz, Andrew Schultz, Nathan Schultz, Megan Schultz, Ben Schultz, Jane Schultz, Aaron Rutter, Sarah Rutter, and Eliana Rutter.
Lloyd began his teaching career in Adrian, MI. at St. John Lutheran Church. From there he was also teacher/principal at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cleveland, OH; Greenfield Peace Lutheran Church, Detroit; St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Detroit; Atonement Lutheran Church, Dearborn; Calvary Lutheran Church, Lincoln Park; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Northville. He was also a basketball referee at many of the schools where he taught.
After studying violin when he was younger, Lloyd learned to play the organ at Concordia. He began playing for church services while still in college and continued playing for fifty-two years. The last congregation where he played was St. Paul’s, Farmington Hills. God gave him a wonderful singing voice which he used in choirs in school and in the community. He was a charter member of Detroit Lutheran Singers and sang with the group until 2010. Three highlights of his musical career were playing the organ for two synodical conventions and singing in an opera with Jerome Hines.
Seven years ago Lloyd developed multiple systems atrophy. God called him away from the disability and frustration of that disease November 17, 2014.
