Born on December 29, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Marilynn lived a life full of love, laughter, and an indomitable sass that left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
Marilynn is survived by her loving husband of 59 years (August 14,1965), Pastor Ernest Charles Wendt and their three sons: Adam-Henry (Heather), Andrew-Nathan (Mina), and Jon-Martin (Megan). She cherished her three grandchildren, Marianna, Clemente, Logan and her extended family including Claude and Carol Childers and their children Ann Homuth (Daniel), Claire Koopman (Christopher), and Sara; as well as Rose Childers and her children Jeff (Rebecca) and James (Christine). Additionally, Marilynn leaves behind her great great nieces and nephews: Jordan, Gabriella, Mason, Margo, Jo Lee, Beau, Mara-Eve, Millie Jane, and Daniel III (Trip).
She is preceded in death by Henry and Hilda Szulczewski (parents), Patricia (Szulczewski) and William Creighton (sister/brother-in-law), and Reginald and Marlene (Wendt) Childers (brother and sister in-law).
A true bibliophile, Marilynn's love for books was only rivaled by her passion for movies that could make her laugh until she cried. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of history and could clean up any game of trivia, leaving her competitors in awe. Her Christmas cookies were the stuff of legend, and her city chicken was a family favorite that will be forever missed at holiday gatherings.
Marilynn’s roots in Detroit ran deep. Growing up and starting her career in the Motor City during its heyday, she held onto those memories dearly and was thrilled to witness its resurgence. One of her last adventures was a trip to Michigan Central.
Her sassy personality and genuine interest in people made her a beloved fixture in every restaurant she entered. She treated each visit like a reunion with friends, stopping by tables to compliment cute babies or ask what someone was having for dinner. Marilynn had a unique gift for making people feel special, simply by wanting to know more about them.
A devoted Lutheran, Marilynn's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She would want to leave her loved ones with a verse that brought her comfort:
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake." - Psalm 23:1-3
Marilynn Rita Szulczewski Wendt will be remembered for her loving heart, keen intellect, and that signature sass that made everyone feel like family. Her legacy of love, laughter, love for animals and curiosity continues to inspire all who had the joy of knowing her. Rest in peace, Marilynn, knowing you brought so much light and joy to the world.
