I grew up in Michigan and knew Marlo in high school. I was recently back in Livonia for the funeral of a dear friend, and learned of Marlo's passing. My heart sank hearing of the battle Marlo had to fight. She sounds like she was a warrior like my friend was.
I remember Marlo as very kind, fun, talented musically/vocally, a good athlete/cheerleader - she definitely stood out in a crowd and left a wonderful impression and could light up a room! I especially recall the lovely connection she had with her brother Craig. They had a great relationship at an age when a lot of siblings don't want to have anything to do with one another. But it was always good to see Craig and Marlo interact and laugh together. She was a sweet girl. I'm so sad that her beautiful light is not with her loved ones on earth...but she is brightening up heaven a great deal.
Warmest regards, Connie Cragel LePere

I will always remember Marlo singing in the Praise Band. Oh how I loved her beautiful voice and bright smile. She is smiling down on us now. Our loss is heavens gain.

Dear Ms. Gates, Craig, Devin, Sue, Tom and Family,
My heart goes out to all of you. I am so sorry for your loss. Marlo had the spirit, voice and smile of an angel. I have such great memories of being a "roomie" with her. She was kind and beautiful. God bless all of you!

Every once in a while you meet someone who leaves a lasting impression with you. Marlo was that person for me. Her obvious dedication toward raising her son would have been enough but she also handled her struggles with such grace and treated others with such kindness - truly a special lady! My heart goes out to all of you at this very difficult time.

Dear Family:
The last time I saw Marlo she was about 16 and full of life. She had come to LAKE GASTON NC to stay with her father for the summer. She was so beautiful and so full of LIFE. Marlo will truely be missed. I wish i could have known her. She was my cousin, and a friend. What I do know is that Family is the most important thing in this world. And Marlo was all about family. Martha would tell me that she (MARLO) loved her son. She was trying to make it to that special day when her son became a man. She truely was an inspiration and hero to us all. She never accepted defeat, even when the odds were stacked against her. I would ask about her over the years; how she was doing. Where she was in her life. Her brother Craig and her father Allen, always told me great and wonderful things about her. I FEEL TRUE SORRY FOR THEIR LOST AND WISH THAT MY WORDS COULD TAKE THE PAIN AWAY. I know her mother, father, brother and SON are feeling pain that is beyond explanation. But in this hour I DO know the pain they feel and the love that has past on to a much more wonderful place. I will keep her in my memories forever. And one day we will all be together again.

Dear Gates Family:
I will always remember Marlo with a smile, her laugh and beautiful voice. May you find peace with her passing, know that she was loved and brought true inspiration to the people around her. She is a hero to many.
I was fortunate to have met Marlo in 8th grade, and graduated high school with her- she will never be forgotten.
