7/30/1925–7/6/2024
Mary was welcomed into heaven on 7/6/2024 at almost 99 years old by Jesus, her
beloved husband Stan, and all the rellies and saints who went before her.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife to Stan for almost 69 years, loving mom of 4,
grandma of 9, and great-grandma of 11. Mary is survived by her children: Thomas
(Paula) Marentette, Kathy Spern, Brian Marentette, and Rose (Craig) Buckley. She is
also survived by her 9 grandchildren: Robert (Jade) Marentette, Aaron (Elizabeth)
Marentette, and Brandon (Gail) Marentette; Kevin (Jill) Spern, Kelly (Kevin) Cassidy,
Jennifer Buckley, Daniel (Katie) Buckley, Katie Buckley, and Caroline (Shawn)
Ewasyshyn. She was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren: Vincenzo and Giovanni
Marentette, Nora and Abby Spern, Liam and Charlotte Cassidy, Dante Ishmael, Harvey
and Evelyn Buckley, and Nova and Luca Ewasyshyn.
In the Melady family, she was the oldest of 8. She was predeceased by her parents,
brothers Fr. Tom (Bud) Melady, Edward Melady, Jack Melady, and sister Angela Smith.
She is survived by sisters Rita Daley, Paula Conry, and brother Mike Melady. She is
also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, both on the Melady and
Marentette sides.
Mary was born in Stratford, Ontario on 7/30/1925 to Thomas and Antoinette (Reinhart)
Melady. She spent many happy summers as a child at Sauble Beach, Ontario, where
her father had built a family compound of cottages. She obtained a bachelor's degree
from University of Toronto and then graduated as a registered nurse from St. Michael’s
hospital in Toronto, Ontario in 1948. She then worked at Harper Hospital in Detroit, MI
(now part of DMC).
She met the love of her life, Stan the Man, through Stan’s sister Jean, her childhood
friend. Mary and Stan were married in Toronto, Ontario in 1951. They then both became
U.S. citizens. They settled first in Inkster, Michigan, and then resided for over 55 years
in Livonia, Michigan, where they raised their family. Both Mary and Stan shared a
devout faith and were very active in their church communities at St. Kevin’s in Inkster
and St. Colette’s in Livonia.
Mary will be remembered as a supportive, loving mom/grandma/great-grandma who
attended many birthday parties, special school events, graduations, and weddings. She
comforted many newborn grandbabies and lived to hold and meet many
great-grandchildren. Mary was never without her purse (like Queen Elizabeth)! She
faithfully remembered birthdays and anniversaries and wrote many greeting
cards/letters late into the night to friends and family. She was the family historian for
both the Melady and Marentette sides. She also enjoyed visiting and feeding relatives
and friends at every opportunity throughout her long life.
Mary faced her many life challenges with grace and grit: learning to drive a car at the
age of 49 yrs, becoming a loving caretaker to Stan for 16 years following his stroke,
managing her own early hearing loss in her late forties, and then managing a cochlear
implant at the age of age 88 years.
Mary lived a long life with the support of all her children, but especially with the support
of her son Brian, who was her caregiver these past several years.
We wish we could keep you with us a little longer mom, but we take comfort knowing
that you and Dad are together again. Happy almost 99th birthday, Mom! We love you!
