Sue was born on February 14, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, to her loving parents, Donald and Mary Carnegie. From the very beginning, Sue possessed a kind heart, generous spirit, and joyful outlook on life that would touch countless people throughout her 84 years.
Sue was the beloved mother of Maureen McGuire, Rob (Heather) Pascoe, and Don (Cinthya Guevara) Pascoe. She was the cherished and devoted "Granny" to her two grandsons, Liam McGuire and Quinn Pascoe, who were truly the lights of her life. Sue also leaves behind her siblings, John (Nancy) Carnegie, Liz Carnegie, and Peg Carnegie. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Cathie Brennan and Patty Carnegie. She was an aunt to Patrick, Kevin and Joe Brennan and Matthew Carnegie, and will be fondly remembered by many extended family members; Mary Ellen Nickodemus, The DiFazio family, Dave Riger, Kim and Glen Short, lifelong friends The Cadoret family and all those blessed to know her.
Sue graduated from Visitation High School in Detroit where she made many friends. Before beginning a career as a receptionist Sue enjoyed working Downtown at Hudson's Department Store, she also worked at DRC Race Track and various retail positions in Livonia. It was later, she found her true calling when she opened an in-home daycare, a business she lovingly operated for more than 20 years. To the many children she cared for, Sue was far more than a daycare provider. She became another grandmother. She poured her heart into every child, creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, encouragement, and unconditional love. The countless lives she helped shape remain a lasting testament to her compassionate heart.
Nothing brought Sue greater happiness than her family. Sue was a wonderful mother. She never missed an opportunity to celebrate the people she loved, whether it was birthdays, graduations, sporting events, or any special milestone. If someone she loved was participating, Sue was there, often the loudest cheerleader in the crowd. In the late 70’s when her children were in the Livonia Junior Football League, Sue volunteered to work with Georgia Kiel selling baked goods, drinks and hot dogs during the games. A fundraiser for the Cardinals team - the sales were done using Sue’s cargo van. It was called the “Cardinal Kitchen” and everyone loved it.
Her bond with her grandsons was something truly special. Liam's love for Batman inspired one of Sue’s favorite roles. Liam was Batman and she happily became Master Bruce’s "Alfred," lovingly answering to "Al" or even "Alfredo" whenever he called. Over 30 years Liam and Sue shared a family friendship that was like no other. Friends till the end. Sue played an integral part in Liam’s childhood. She worked at Liam’s grade school. Sue was there for Liam through it all. She was a constant sense of peace in his life, one he will miss greatly.
Sue loved cheering Quinn on from the stands during his hockey games, enthusiastically supporting him every chance she got. Growing up Quinn played soccer, flag football and T-Ball, all events Sue loved attending. Each year, Sue made a custom birthday cake for Quinn’s party. Everyone
looked forward to seeing what she created each year. Sundays were spent with the grandsons crafting, playing games or watching football. Sue loved encouraging their hobbies and interests, always making each grandson feel uniquely loved and celebrated.
Sue had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. Her home was filled with warmth, laughter, delicious food, and love. She was an incredible cook and baker whose famous lasagna, pasta salad, brownies, cakes, and countless other family favorites became staples of every holiday gathering. There was never a shortage of food at Sue’s table. She always joked she cooked enough to feed an army, but no one ever left hungry.
A talented and creative soul, Sue loved crafting, sewing. She found joy in sharing her creations at local craft shows, where her creativity and attention to detail shined just as brightly as her personality. She loved ceramics class with her dear friend Barb, not much painting got done but they sure did laugh as they drank coffee and chatted.
Outside her home, Sue took tremendous pride in her summer hosta and impatiens landscaping. She lovingly cared for her flowers, making sure her yard was always colorful, welcoming, and full of life. She had a bench under a tree in the front yard for neighbors to rest, a welcome to all who walked by.
Sue adored every holiday, but Halloween held a special place in her heart. Her home became the gathering place everyone looked forward to visiting each Halloween night. After trick or treating all were invited back for some “Halloweenies and Monster-ccioli” (her names for hot dogs and mostaccioli.) Every year Sue dressed up, her favorite costumes were clowns and witches. She delighted in creating special treat bags for every trick-or-treater, making sure children and even adults left with smiles and cherished memories. In her eyes you were “never too old to Trick or Treat.”
Sue was simply a joy to be around. She loved music, laughter, and making every gathering feel like a celebration. She watched The Tonight Show and knew all the latest actors and singers. She was a die hard soap opera lover from way back and enjoyed watching them daily with her daughter, Maureen.
She also had a deep affection for animals throughout her life. The dogs she welcomed into her home reflected her own gentle nature and became treasured companions who were loved as members of the family.
She believed deeply in focusing on the positive, choosing kindness over negativity, and finding reasons to smile no matter what life brought her way. Her optimism was contagious, and her gentle spirit made everyone around her feel loved.
A friend gifted Sue a statue that read a famous quote by folk singer, Woody Guthrie. "I have room for one more friend, and he is every man.” How fitting for Sue, as she lived her life with the same philosophy.
Sue’s legacy is one of unconditional love, selfless generosity, creativity, joy, and unwavering devotion to her family. She leaves behind countless beautiful memories that will continue to bring comfort, laughter, and inspiration for generations to come.
Though her presence will be profoundly missed, her love lives on in every family tradition, every homemade meal, every blooming flower, every Halloween celebration, every craft made with love, and every cherished memory shared by those fortunate enough to know her.
A Celebration of Sue’s Life will be held on August 13th. Those wishing to receive information regarding the service can RSVP at msploveyoubunches.com
