May Bernice Dubuc, born to William and Maude Skinner on September 27th, 1925 in Prince Rupert British Columbia, died on February 27th, 2022. May passed in her home in the presence of her daughters, Michelle and Donna, who lived with and cared for her the past two years with the assistance of May’s special friend, helper and gardener, Patrice Zychowicz and The Care Team Hospice. She is survived by her children Dennis (Carol), Susan (Robert), Robin (Julia), Michelle, Donna (Michael), 25 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and adopted into the family Arnold and Catherine Bruveris. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Roger, her sons, Gary and Daryl and her much loved daughters-in-law, Linda and Diane.
May graduated from high school and went on to Teachers College. Fresh out of school, she taught grades 1-8 at the first school at Inverness Cannery in the north woods of Prince Rupert. It was here, during World War II, that she met Roger, who was in the US army and stationed nearby. The war ended and she moved to Detroit, where they were married and raised 7 children.
May developed a love of gardening from her father. The expansive garden of her Northville home became her ministry, and all were invited to see the beauty of God’s creation and read the Bible verses placed throughout her garden. She was an active member of the Country Garden Club of Northville since 1987. Her garden was on the very first garden walk in 1994, and 4 more after that. As a member of the club, she helped make florals for hospice patients for many years. She was a long-time member of the Christian organization, Winning Women, as well as the Red Hat Society; she was host to many of their luncheons in her home. May was an involved member of Saint Andrews Church, later attended Trinity Church, and supported many ministries including Widows Might, the Trinity Church Food Pantry and Samaritan’s Purse. One of her most passionate ministries was her annual English tea party for family, friends and their guests. Her love for God overflowed with every cup of tea she poured.
Of all her ministries, her greatest was to her own grandchildren - teaching them prayers, scripture, and God’s forgiveness through Christ’s death, resurrection, and return to come. To her family and all those blessed with knowing May, the ultimate legacy she leaves is one of unconditional love, a striking and unmistakable reflection of Christ’s love for all.
