Merriam Weglarz, 77, of Livonia, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 16th, 2020. Merriam was the second daughter born to William and Helen Fennell in Chicago on May 22, 1943. Merriam was raised, educated, and married on Chicago’s South Side. Ed and Merriam met at a high school football game in September 1958. Merriam was employed at Illinois Tech (IIT) while Ed attended Illinois Institute of Technology. They were married on June 29, 1963. After Ed graduated and while working for Shell Oil Company they lived in Milwaukee, Hartland, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Schaumburg, Illinois, before moving to Livonia. Merriam administered the credentialing/registration function at over 100 Indycar motor racing events across North America over the last 30 years making many friends along the way. She was an avid seamstress and a long time member of the American Sewing Guild. Merriam practiced her faith privately and publicly while volunteering as a sacristan at St. Aidan parish and at masses celebrated at the motor races. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island was her favorite vacation destination and she had the opportunity to visit there with Ed often. Merriam enjoyed swimming, water aerobics, and other activities offered at the Burton Hollow Swim Club where she was a member for 48 years.

Merriam is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Edward; sons, Douglas (Dianna) Weglarz and Gregory (Jennifer) Weglarz; grandchildren, Maggie, Caraline, Joey, and Lucy; and sister, Mildred Nelson. Merriam was predeceased by her parents, William and Helen.

Dear Ed and family,
I was so sorry when I heard about Merriam’s death when it was announced during mass on 11/22. Merriam was always so kind, warm, and friendly and we always chatted when I was there early to be a greeter and she the sacristan. I was always in awe of her beautiful clothes and that she made them! Merriam came to my rescue several times - with fixing and hemming curtains and most important the dress for my sons wedding. Merriam was always willing to help and seemed to always be up at church helping the few times I was there to do the same. I feel so fortunate I got to know her and hear her stories, share conversation and my favorite laugh... I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, and that your memories will bring you comfort...
peace to you all,

Cindy Horgan

Merriam was always fun to be with, whether we were sewing or talking about sewing. She loved making things for her grandkids!
She will be missed by so many. I'm so happy to have known her. Always a positive and creative lady.
Rest in peace, Merriam.

It has been a privilege to know Merriam through her love of sewing. We met at the Novi Viking store, when I worked there and she was a customer. We remained friends through ASG. She was always kind and helpful; and willing to share her love of sewing.

I’m so shocked and sorry to hear of Merriam’s passing. She and I were in an Aquacise class together for 20 years at Burton Hollow Swim Club. We had so much fun exercising, sharing stories, and visiting together. She told me all about her sewing, family, travels- especially to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, the Grand Prix, etc. We had regular Aquacise luncheons, and Merriam would always bring margaritas for us to enjoy and have a party atmosphere.

Years ago when I was considering remodeling my kitchen, Merriam invited me over to see her new kitchen, so I could get some ideas. She also gave me some baby Rose of Sharon bushes to plant in my yard.

Because Merriam and I were both kind of tall, we were often together in the deeper water of the pool working out. The last time I saw her was in August or September on a bright, sun filled day. We were splashing around, visiting and joking. I’ll remember her like that, her beautiful smile and her pretty hair glimmering in the light.

To her family: I’m so sorry. I watched the video, and it was very beautiful.
