Mike was the beloved husband of the late Juniaetta “June” Rodriguez, who preceded him in death in December 2025. Together, they shared 73 wonderful years of marriage and built a beautiful life centered on family.
He was the loving father of Steve (Michelle) Rodriguez, Jacqulyn (James) Hagan, David (Theresa) Rodriguez, Patti Naysmith, Nancy (Scott) Showers, and Christopher (Kelly) Rodriguez. Mike was the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 14 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. His family was his greatest love and meant everything to him.
A proud University of Michigan graduate, Mike earned his bachelor’s degree and participated in wrestling, football, and baseball. Wrestling remained his first love and became a lifelong passion that he shared with generations of young athletes.
Mike dedicated 40 years to coaching wrestling at Detroit Catholic Central, serving as head coach from 1967 to 2007. Known affectionately as Coach Rod, he led his teams to seven state championships and was named Michigan High School Wrestling Coach of the Year five times. In 1972, he was named National Coach of the Year. His extraordinary accomplishments earned him induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Catholic High School League Hall of Fame in 1987. Beyond wrestling, Mike also served as head golf coach and freshman football coach at Catholic Central.
While his coaching accomplishments were extraordinary, Mike’s influence extended far beyond wins and championships. He was a kind, caring, and dedicated teacher and mentor who was loved and cherished by his students and wrestlers. He taught lessons that reached beyond athletics and left a lasting impression on the many young men fortunate enough to know him.
Mike also loved fishing and enjoyed sharing that passion with others. Above all, he treasured his family, who remained the center of his world throughout his life. His legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, former students, and the countless lives he touched.
Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June, and his brothers, Sal, Val, Joe, and John.
