Richard Robert Askew, affectionately known as “Dick,” passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born on June 11, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to his loving parents, Sam and Ina Askew.
Richard was the beloved husband of Dolores, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, family, and countless cherished memories. He was the loving father of Sherry (Timothy) Lumley, Michael (Connie) Askew, and Robert (Sheree) Askew. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Amanda (Daniel) Pecheniuk, Caleb (Courtney) Askew, Zachary Lumley, Jacob Askew, Hannah Askew, and Noah Askew, and a loving great-grandfather to Addison and Skylar Pecheniuk and Arthur Askew.
Richard was the dear brother of Etta (Clarence) Norman and Andrea (Craig) Sanborn. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Matilda (Wendell) Taylor and Sammie (Glen) Peach. He was also a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Richard graduated from Hazel Park High School and began his career shortly after graduation with Burroughs Corporation, now known as Unisys. While working, he continued his education by attending many classes at Lawrence Technological University, further developing his skills and passion for technology. He enjoyed a successful career as a Software Project Engineer and proudly retired in his late 50s.
Music held a special place in Richard’s heart, and he shared that love by leading music with his tuning fork at West Point Church of Christ in Livonia. After retirement, Richard continued sharing his talents and passions with others. He enjoyed working part-time at NorthRidge Church, assisting with their music program. He was also a member of the NorthRidge Choir and sang in many concerts over the years.
Richard was a man of many talents and was known as a true handyman. There was no project too big or too small that he would not take on. He took great pride in fixing things himself and making sure the job was done right. His helpful nature extended far beyond his own home, as he was always one of the first people to step forward when someone was in need. Richard had a caring heart and a genuine desire to help others, often taking the time to drive close friends to appointments, repairing something, offering guidance, or simply lending his time. Richard was always willing to help and never hesitated to be there for others.
Richard's family and friends found his unique sense of humor quite entertaining. He was incredibly sharp-minded and always knew exactly how to make people laugh with a perfect one-liner.
Above all, Richard treasured his family. He never missed an opportunity to cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events and extracurricular activities, always showing his unwavering support and encouragement. One of his greatest joys was becoming a “Papa” again to his great-grandchildren, who brought him immense happiness.
Richard’s kindness, generosity, sense of humor and devotion to his family will forever be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and love that will continue through all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held at Harry J. Will Funeral Home on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Richard will be laid to rest at Roseland Park Cemetery. In memory of Richard, memorial donations may be made to Lamb & Lion Ministries.
