Richard (affectionately known as Dick), was born near the beginning of the Great Depression. He attended Wayne State University where he decided to study finance, which led to a job with the City of Detroit in their Budget Bureau. This turned into a lifetime career where he enjoyed what he did and the people he worked with. While at Wayne, he also decided to accept the offer to play on a friend’s church baseball team, which led to meeting the lovely and vivacious Kay Rideout. This turned into a lifetime commitment (62 years!) where he treasured his beloved Kay and the family they created.
They spent their first years of marriage in the Navy where he used his talents as a disbursing officer in Georgia, San Diego and finally El Centro, California. They welcomed their first child, Diana and then headed back to Michigan where they settled on Greenview Ave in Detroit. They soon added Nancy and later David to their growing family as well as a wealth of neighborhood friends. While he liked his job, he loved time with his family. He filled their childhood with cottage vacations on Platte Lake and Higgins Lake then bought a travel trailer so they could camp all over the beautiful state of Michigan and even Colorado and California. He and Kay made sure there was plenty of time with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins so they grew up feeling and returning the love of extended family.
The addition of grandchildren brought immense joy and he filled their lives with love and laughter and of course, family trips. He passed on his zest for life but more importantly his love for Jesus. He was actively involved at First Baptist of Royal Oak (now Genesis) where his faith grew, lifelong friends were made and opportunities to serve and give abounded.
Whether at work, church or with family, he gave generously of his time and resources. His was truly a life well-lived. He will be so missed but Dick leaves a legacy of faith, hope and love that will last for many generations of those privileged to know and love him.
A private memorial service will be held for the family. You are able to join in the celebration of Richard's life through Facebook live (link provided below).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Genesis The Church in Richard's honor.
