

Born on November 8, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, to her devoted parents Alphonse and Mary McCann, Rita lived a life full of laughter, faith, and family. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph VanWynsberghe, with whom she shared many loving years.
Rita was the treasured mother of Janet (John) Vichinsky, the late Susan Arquette, Loretta (Jim) Mason, and MaryJo (Mike) Opiela. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Tina, John, Kevin, Karissa, Heather, Shannon, Stacy, Dustin, Brent, and Eric; a great-grandmother to 19, and a great-great-grandmother to 2. She also held a special place in the hearts of her many nieces and nephews.
Rita was the dear sister of Mary Ellen, Loretta Ann, and Donald, and was preceded in death by her siblings Patrick, Robert, Pauline, Grace Celine, Marie Theresa, and Buddy.
A dedicated professional, Rita served as an Executive Secretary at General Motors for 30 years. Her work ethic and commitment were matched only by her zest for life. She loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas, and she never passed up a chance to try her luck. She enjoyed luncheons with her Livonia Ladies Club, being surrounded by family and friends, and she brought joy and energy to every gathering. Her evenings were never complete without watching Wheel of Fortune at 7 p.m. sharp.
Rita was a devout Catholic, and her faith remained a strong foundation throughout her life. Her friendly, outgoing spirit made her beloved by many, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edith Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Rita will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Rita lived a beautiful, full life, and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strong family ties. She will be forever remembered and dearly missed.
