Robert James McGaughey of Westland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at the age of 92, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Judith Ann McGaughey, who remained faithfully by his side until the very end.
Robert was born on November 22, 1933 in Brazil, Indiana, to Clarence McGaughey and Mary Margaret Tennis. During his childhood, he looked forward to spending summers on the family farm, where he developed close bonds with his aunts, uncle, and cousins. Those relationships remained important throughout his life. He is fondly remembered by his cousins Sister Barbara Schmitz, Connie Egloff, Barbie Vining (Roul), Michael Holmes (Joyce), Larry McGaughey Jr., Cindy Joan McGaughey Connelly, Gail Johnson, and Cindy Hadgian. Though miles often separated them, Robert stayed in close contact with his family, especially his Canadian cousins, enjoying regular conversations and sharing in one another's lives.
Robert also cherished his extended family through his stepmother. He shared a special relationship with his stepsisters which preceded him in death, Betty Rhode and Norma Poloskey. Betty's children, John, Michael, Joanne, and Lisa, and Norma's son, Michael Poloskey, dearly loved their Uncle Bob and will treasure the memories they shared with him.
A proud patriot, Robert enlisted in the United States Army and served his country honorably for two years. After completing his military service, he pursued his artistic talents by attending the Society of Arts and Crafts for four years, studying to become a commercial artist.
Faith was the cornerstone of Robert's life. He devoted himself to serving his church and sharing the love of Jesus with others. As a Sunday School Superintendent, he found great joy in working with children and helping nurture their faith. He organized annual Easter egg hunts and Christmas parties, creating cherished traditions for countless families. Robert was also known for his compassionate spirit and willingness to pray for others. Whether among friends or strangers, he readily offered encouragement, comfort, and prayer to those in need.
Robert enjoyed many interests throughout his life. He loved attending performances by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and especially enjoyed listening to Judith play the violin. He was also a devoted admirer of classic automobiles and looked forward to attending car shows and auto exhibitions whenever he could.
Above all, Robert will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his love for family, his servant's heart, and the kindness he extended to everyone he met. His life touched many people, and his memory will continue to be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia, MI 48152, on June 20, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at 12:00 pm.
