Ruth Thelma Thompson was born on September 24, 1935 in Curtis, Arkansas to Charlie and Obie Thompson. The family moved from Arkansas to Wayne, Michigan in 1945 and in 1948 moved to Southwest Detroit. In 1952 the family moved to Cortland Street in Detroit, Michigan.
Ruth married Douglas Jackson on March 12, 1958, they remained together as a couple for 68 years. The two had four children, Gayle, Douglas Jr (Kathy), Dawn (Ken(d.)) and Sonia (Dwayne), eight grandchildren and eight Great grandchildren.
Ruth was at one time a member of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and Berea St. Paul United Methodist Church. She later joined Great Faith Ministries in the mid 90’s. She was an active member and one of the “Mothers” of the Church until her health did not allow her to attend on a regular basis.
Ruth loved baseball and “her” Detroit Tigers. She hardly ever missed a Tigers baseball game and would create scorecards for every game (something she learned to do from her Father as a child). Ruth was an avid card player, loved to dance and be with her family. Ruth was a beautiful, loving, caring and giving person. Anyone that was in need, she was willing to help, provide whatever was needed including shelter. She was a Mother and Sister to many family members and friends. Ruth was a great listener, keeping tabs on all that were near and dear to her heart, having no problems with providing her own opinion.
Ruth worked in the Retail field as an Office Manager and after retirement she continued to work and fellowship with others as an Avon Sales Representative.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Charlie and Obie, brothers Thomas and Henry, sisters Charlene and Roberta, grandson Daymon “Chappy”, brother-in-law Charles “Sonny” and son-in-law Ken. Ruth had eleven siblings, 10 of which preceded her in death.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: Husband Douglas “Dougie”, Children: Gayle, Douglas Jr (Kathy), Dawn and Sonia (Dwayne). Grandchildren: Ralphael “Rocky”, Kyle, Shannon (Ralph), Charly, Dwanisha, Kayla and Douglas III “DJ”. Great-grandchildren: Chappel, Pharell, Camille, Braelynn, Ralphael II “Deuce”, Reign, Kameron and Elijah. Her youngest brother Charles, and two sisters-in-law: Loretta (Abel) and Sylvia. As well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
A visitation for Ruth will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Harry J Will Funeral Home, 37000 W. Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152, followed by a celebration of life service at 12:30 PM.
