1929 - 2018
On October 11, 1929, Sam was born to Spiro and Effie Chavel, the second of three children, (the late Joan Sarris) and Marie Torakis. In 1947, Sam graduated from Detroit's Eastern High School where, in his senior year, he received a "Certificate for Superior Work in Mathematics".
After attending Wayne State University, Sam served in Korea with the Headquarters Battery of the 1st FOB. During his time in the U. S. Army, he earned the United Nations Service Medal for his work as an interpreter for members of the Greek Military who were in Korea to observe operations. He was also awarded the Korea Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the National Defense Service Medal. Sam was Honorably Discharged in 1953, having reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon returning to Detroit, he managed the family wholesale candy and tobacco business, eventually becoming an owner/partner.
In 1954, Sam met a young college girl named Dena, who became his beloved wife on November 6, 1955. Their marriage produced two outstanding sons. After retiring, he spent much of his leisure time bowling, golfing and taking yearly trips with Dena to Aruba. In later years he enjoyed reading and solving Sudoku and diagramless crossword puzzles.
Sam was extremely proud of his sons, Spiro and George, and had a special place in his heart for his daughter-in-law Michelle. His greatest joy was being "Papouli" to his much loved, amazing grandsons, Zac and Seth. Sam epitomized the word "Gentleman" and will be remembered as an awesome, loving and giving husband by his wife and best friend, Dena.
