Born on October 21, 1936, in Detroit, William (Bill) was the son of the late Dean and Marion (Guy) Shiels. He was raised in a close-knit family, eventually graduating from the University of Detroit with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Bill began his career at an architectural firm before founding his own business, Shiels Associates Architects. His vision, dedication, and skill left a lasting mark on the city of Livonia and beyond. Later, his firm merged with Clifford Wright Architecture, and he continued his career until his retirement in 2001 at the age of 65.
Bill was originally married to Marilyn Shiels (Smith) and raised three children, Bruce, Lynne and Kristin in Livonia. Bill met his current wife, Marcy, at Hammell Music Store, where she was part of a group of piano players. A shared love of music brought them together, and they were married on March 6, 1992. For thirty-three years, they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, travel, and deep companionship.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Marcy Shiels; his daughters Lynne (Frank) Rademacher and Kristin Letts; grandchildren Tyler (Katie), Blake, Hana (Josh), Brandon (Kyla), and Kyle; and great-grandchildren Faith, Brooks, and eagerly anticipating Emerson in August of this year. He also leaves behind his cherished siblings: Mary (Bill) Stuart, Richard (Louise) Shiels, and Cathy (Al) Karr.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Marion; his beloved son, Bruce Shiels; and his sister, Ruth Roantree.
In retirement, Bill fully embraced life’s adventures. Inspired by a trip to Florida taken by his daughter Kristin, he and Marcy began traveling the world—exploring the United States, Europe, and, most memorably, Africa, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of seeing and riding elephants, which he adored.
He loved gardening, reading mystery novels, cheering for the Detroit Lions, and spending time with family and friends. He loved sailing his sail boat as a young man and then with his children. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years and as a young man found a calling to participate at the Higgins Lake - Camp Westminster including the role of camp counselor providing many good times and memories which he passed to his children. He was also a dedicated member of St. Timothy Presbyterian Church, where he and Marcy found a spiritual home. He contributed his time and talents to the STARS (St. Timothy’s Active Retirees), helping with church projects and enjoying retreats to Camp Westminster with fellow members. Bill’s love of music started as a young man yet he focused on his love for playing piano. He led several musical events when he lived in Florida for his Senior Community which he was very proud of. He loved whimsical toys for kids and a good joke. He was a wonderful man who will be deeply missed.
