Lydia Berta Ramonas (nee Bittens) passed away peacefully on February 19, 2020, at her Chartwell (Blackwater, London) home. Born on May 23, 1919 in Lithuania, Lydia will just miss celebrating her 102nd birthday. She grew up in Lithuania and lived on a farm where she loved to ride horses and garden with her father. She continued her love of gardening throughout her life, becoming a master at growing roses, and helped with the gardens in the nursing home. She lived through the horrors of both the German and Russian occupation of Lithuania. She fled Lithuania to Germany where she lived for 3 years. She told many stories of the struggles she and the family survived during that time. She came to Canada in 1949 where she met her husband Ignas and raised two children (Ruth and Edward) in North Bay and London, Ontario. Lydia will always be remembered for her extremely outgoing and feisty personality with a somewhat dry sense of humor. Although she loved a good argument she still had a wonderful ability to find the positive in almost any situation. Lydia did not like to be idle. She loved to dance and kept on dancing into her 100th year. She completed lovely works of Japanese embroidery, knitting, smocking and leatherwork. She could carry on a vigorous conversation in 5 different languages at a dinner party. She would translate for people well into her 90’s. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Ramonas and her husband Art Duke, her son Edward Ramonas and his wife Dale McMillan her grandchildren Rachel Duke, Rosalind Duke, Shandra Tatomir (Paul Tatomir), great grandchildren Damian Ramonas, Alex Ramonas, and her nieces in Germany Gerda and Christel Bolz, predeceased by her grandson Craig Ramonas, her husband Ignas Ramonas and her brothers and sisters in Lithuania and Germany. The family would like to thank the staff at Chartwell (Blackwater Drive, London) for the great care and support they provided to her and the family during these last few years.

My condolences to the whole family. Lydia attended Redeemer Lutheran Church for many years. We enjoyed conversation through those years, and she wanted to stay in touch when she moved. She had learned how to cope successfully with change in life. She had good stories. She will be remembered and missed.
