

Al was born on July 12, 1926 in Mexico, He came to the United States on May 22, 1936 at the age of 9. He lived in Texas and New Mexico before coming to California. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles, he entered the United States Army in 1945. Following his service in the Army, he was an amateur boxer. He married his high school sweetheart, Matilda “Tillie” Lopez in 1947. Al and Tillie moved to South Gate in 1955. Al owned and operated Garfield Upholstery for over 40 years. Al was involved in coaching sports teams for his sons at South Gate Park for almost 20 years. He was also heavily involved in the community, was named an Azalea King and was the Grand Marshal for the 1997 South Gate Parade. Al was a hardworking man who adored his wife, was proud of his family, and believed in God, honesty and respect. Al is survived by his wife of 68 years, Tillie, eight children, David, Sue, Daniel, Jim, Victor, Albert, Terri and Tony; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and many other family members. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Mass will be Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Both will take place at the Chapel at All Souls Mortuary, 4400 Cherry Avenue, Long Beach, California. Graveside services will be private.
