Nov 12, 1926 ~ Oct 2, 2011
Born on November 12, 1926 in Providence, R.I., Betty Duffy‐Jeffery peacefully left our world with family members at her side on Sunday, October 2, 2011, to be with the Lord. She suffered complications following surgery for appendicitis. Never one to sit around, she was blessed with a full and generally healthy and active life, one filled with countless friends (on both coasts) and a loving family.
Betty married young in Rhode Island, giving birth to her four children there before moving with her husband Walter Duffy, Jr. to Long Beach in 1963 to continue raising their family. She worked for 52 years of her life, the majority of them as an executive secretary, counting the California Museum of Science and Industry, Continental and TWA Airlines, and The Boeing Company among her employers. Betty was fortunate to work with Pierre Salinger at Continental, who then persuaded her to work with him on Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign. This experience provided a colorful backdrop to her life, one that she grew to cherish with each passing year. Betty found later love with her husband Jim, who became the light of her life after their marriage in 2002. They enjoyed their retirement years by traveling, socializing with friends and family, and just enjoying each other’s company.
Betty enriched all who knew her with her boundless love and caring, and received every bit of it in return. She will be fondly remembered for doting over her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, her outgoing, bubbly, adventuresome personality and sense of humor, her excitement over celebrity, her penchant for long cellphone messages, and her love of extra butter at the dinner table.
Betty is preceded in death by her first husband Walter and son Michael. She is survived by her husband of 9 years, Jim Jeffery, brother Thomas Marino, children Sharyn Harvey, Tom Duffy (Cathy), Lisa Duffy‐Way, grandchildren Jennifer Greget (Mark), Matthew Duffy, Erin Duffy, Michael Gould, Tristen Gould, great‐grandchildren Summer Greget and Skyler Greget, and nephews Thomas Marino, Jr and David Marino.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 6 from 3pm to 6pm at Luyben Family Dilday-Mottell Mortuary, 5161 Arbor Rd, Long Beach, with rosary immediately following. A memorial Mass will take place on Friday, October 7 at 11:30am at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 3954 Palo Verde Ave, Long Beach. After Mass, interment at All Souls Cemetery, 4400 Cherry Ave, Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, Betty asked that donations be made to either the Hospice Foundation or the American Heart Association.
