Herman “Herb” Thomas, born February 20, 1928, went home to be with the Lord on October 1, 2012. He was born to Edward and Mary Thomas in Los Angeles, California. His father, Edward, his mother, Mary, sisters, Marie and Cecelia, and his wives, Mary Louise and Fayetta, preceded Herb in death. His brother, Richard and sister-in-law, Dee, his sister, Catherine Ann and brother-in-law, Art, and caregivers/nephew Tim and wife Marie Hodges survive him. In addition to several other nephews and nieces, many good friends also survive him.
Herb graduated from Mount Carmel High School. Soon thereafter he proudly joined the Army in 1945, serving with the Occupational Forces in Japan. Herb was honorably discharged in 1948 and went on to graduate from Loyola University. He spent the remainder of his life in California.
A man who retained his friendships, Herb always kept in touch with high school, work and golf friends. Until his recent battle with cancer, he enjoyed twice weekly golf. He looked forward to trading verbal jibes as well as a libation or two with the golfers. Above all, he cherished the truly great friendships he developed through golf. He also looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Alaska.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 10 am at St. Cornelius Church, 5500 Wardlow Road in Long Beach. Following services, Herb’s brother, Richard and sister, Ann will host a reception at his home in Long Beach at 5810 Pageantry. Come join us for a little food and drink while we reminisce about the wonderful man Herb was.
In lieu of flowers, the Family respectfully suggests that donations be made to a Cancer Research of your choice.
