Jeanne Elizabeth Norton was reunited with her heavenly Father on Friday, August 5, 2011, three days after she celebrated her 97th birthday with family in Lancaster, Ca.
Jeanne was born on August 2, 1914 in Crete, Nebraska. She was the second child of Wilhelmine and William Norton. Jeanne grew up with her older brother, Glen, and younger brother James. She graduated from Crete High School in 1932. Throughout her school years, she was very active in school, church and community activities. Jeanne was involved in these activities with her two best friends and cousins, Gail Davis and Gertrude Kersenbrock.
During World War II, she worked for the War Department in Washington DC. Following the war Jeanne completed an Air Force civil service program. She was hired as an accountant at Edwards Air Force Base in Lancaster and then at the Naval Air Station at Point Mugu. Jeanne retired after 30 years of service. At retirement she was supervisor of the Purchase Material Section, Supply Department Receipt Control Branch. Shortly after her retirement in l976, Jeanne moved to Long Beach to live with her dad. She took care of him until his death in 1989 at 101 years of age. At that time she decided to move to Leisure World. During many of her retirement years, she worked as a tour guide for a local travel agency and traveled extensively worldwide.
Jeanne had great love and respect for her mother, Willa; father, William; brothers Glen and James (“Bus”), cousins, and all of their children. Jeanne and her cousins, Gail and Gertrude were especially fun aunts and great role models for the next generation. Jeanne’s priorities were her Catholic faith and her family. She often attended daily mass and always went to sleep at night praying the rosary for someone. She spent every other weekend traveling to visit family members’ homes. She loved a “good party” and the family picnics, whether at Bixby Park on holidays or at one of her brothers’ homes. She loved the family interaction with the kids and the singing that typically followed dinner. She fulfilled her roles of daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, Godmother and friend in a special way. She enjoyed her Leisure World years and the many friends she made there. In August 2009, she moved from Leisure World to be closer to her family in Palmdale.
Jeanne is preceded in death by her mother, father and 2 brothers. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as their children and grandchildren. We all will especially miss her quick wit, big smile and love for her family and friends. God bless you Jeanne. We all love you and will miss you!
