Dr. Manmohan Lall Khurana
On Saturday, October 15th 2016 at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, the South Bay lost a beloved Internist, Pulmonologist and Critical Care physician, husband, father, friend, and colleague, Manmohan L. Khurana, MD.
The son of Hargobind and Shanti Khurana, Manmohan was born in Lodhran, Pakistan, and received his medical education at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. Seeking better opportunities abroad, he moved to Chicago in July 1969 to train in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital, subsequently Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Boston, and in Pulmonology at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. Growing tired of the cold East Coast winters, he sought warmer climes in the west, moving to Southern California in 1973.
In Southern California, he taught at UCLA, USC, and Martin Luther King Hospital, and published widely on lung biochemistry. Settling in the South Bay, he started his private practice at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Torrance Memorial Medical Center, where he was affectionately nicknamed “Papa K” by nurses in the ICU.
Meeting the love of his life, Vineeta Mehra in New York City in 1980, they married in New Delhi in December 1984, and welcomed two sons in 1986 and 1987, Neil and Nevil Khurana.
He was passionate about his work and spent many hours treating patients irrespective of their financial status. Nurses and doctors found him walking the hospital corridors in the early hours of the morning doing what he loved most. At home, he read voraciously to keep up with the latest advances in medicine and provide the highest care possible. This left him little time to pursue his favorite pastime, golf.
Generous with his time, he often provided advice to new physicians seeking to set up their practice. His passion for medicine was only matched by his interest in international affairs and Indian politics. His humor, positive outlook on life, and devotion to his family will always be remembered and missed.
