January 16, 1928 – April 10, 2023
Mario Oswald Di Vito passed away peacefully in Long Beach CA at the age of 95 on April 10, 2023. Mario is survived by his daughter Kathleen Keirn, her husband Tim Keirn and step-grandson Peter Keirn; and son Robert Di Vito and his wife, Alicia Di Vito and grandsons Samuel and Joseph Di Vito, and step-granddaughter Jenna (McCann) Boggan. Mario was preceded in death by his parents Nunzio and Clotilda Di Vito (nee Masciangelo), his brother Galileo Di Vito and his ex-wife Addie Di Vito (nee Mosier).
Mario was born in Detroit Michigan to immigrants from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Mario was an excellent golfer and worked in the golf industry his entire life and began caddying in Detroit during the depression to help support his family. He held several positions at the Rancho Park and Griffith Park public golf courses in Los Angeles. He retired in the early 1990s after working for the Bel Air Country Club. For those who knew Mario, it is entirely appropriate that he saw his last Master’s Tournament before passing away in his sleep that same night.
In 1945, Mario’s parents and family moved to Los Angeles, CA where he graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Army and served in in the 63rd Coastal Artillery Regiment at Fort Bliss Texas and was stationed in Wiesbaden Germany until late 1952. He later attended Los Angeles Community College where he met his future wife Addie Mosier. They married in 1957 and were later divorced in 1963. Mario spent much of his life resident in the house of his parents after their passing in the Melrose area of Los Angeles. In 2014 he moved to Long Beach and resided in an additional dwelling at the home of his daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Tim.
Mario strongly identified with his Italian heritage and delicatessen food and was very proud of his own homemade pasta sauce always served over De Cecco spaghetti #12. Mario enjoyed old movies on TV and was an avid reader of military, political and Los Angeles history, as well as of contemporary politics. Remarkably, he completed reading The Entire January 6th Report a few weeks before he died.
Mario will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
Grave-side services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 11:30. The Keirn family would like to thank the staff at Vista Del Mar Assisted Living in Long Beach CA, where Mario resided very happily since 2021, for their care for Mario.
