

Richard Edgar Rivers Jr of Long Beach, CA, passed away on May 31, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. Richard was born July 16, 1926 to Richard and Tomasa in Cavite City, Philippines. He spent an idyllic childhood in Olongapo, Philippines. Richard’s teenage years were disrupted by the invasion of the Japanese in 1941, and as an American citizen he was forced into hiding. He and his brothers actively engaged in guerrilla warfare against the invaders, and he survived the war. At age 24 Richard met young socialite Anita Yambao who became his wife of 66 years. He served in the US Air Force from 1951-1955 and was decorated for his outstanding service. In 1953, he moved his young family to the United States, finishing out his term in the Air Force at Clovis AFB, New Mexico. Richard then settled in Long Beach, California, where he became a valued long-time employee of GTE, and raised four children. He retired from GTE in 1991. Richard enjoyed participating in many active sports, including bowling, golf, tennis, skin-diving, spear fishing, basketball, and jogging. He is preceded in death by his wife Anita Rivers and grandson Richard Rivers IV. He is survived by his loving children Philip (Geri), Stanley, Bridgett (Tony), and Richard III (Cheryl). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be held on the following dates: Viewing and Rosary on June 14 at 4 PM at Stricklin/Snively Mortuary Long Beach. Funeral Service at Stricklin/Snively Mortuary on June 15 at 10 AM followed by Interment at All Souls Cemetery.
