Rose Mary Clare, 92, passed away on April 21, 2013 in Lakewood, California. She was born on June 3, 1920 in St. Joseph Missouri, the youngest of five children to James and Mary Elizabeth (Welch) McCarthy. She spent her first 17 years in Missouri before moving to southern California due to her father’s health. She graduated from Luezinger High School in Lawndale, California. She worked for a period of time after graduation as a sales clerk for Kress Department Stores in Los Angeles. She was married to Glenn Clare on September 20, 1949. Their first child was born in December 1950. They moved to a new home in the new suburb of Lakewood, California in July of 1952. Rose Mary would live there the rest of her life. Their youngest son was born in August of 1956. She was a devoted mother and wife and took pride in raising her family. Her devote Catholic faith gave her much strength and comfort through the years. She was an original parishioner of St. Pancratius church in Lakewood.
One of her favorite pastimes, because she never learned to drive, was walking throughout the neighborhoods. She also became an avid fan of the Los Angeles sports teams, the Dodgers and the Lakers. She never missed a Lakers game, listening to them on radio if she couldn’t watch them on TV. She loved playing solitaire when not engrossed in a good mystery novel. A lover of animals, she almost always had at least one pet in the house. Her favorite pet was her shepherd mix dog, Brenda, who became her inseparable companion for over ten years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her four siblings, and her husband Glenn. She is survived by her two sons, Terry Clare and his wife Jan Clare of Oklahoma City, and Dennis Clare of Lakewood.
Her visitation will be Thursday from 3 - 7 pm at the mortuary with her funeral mass Friday at 10 am at St. Pancratius Church.
