Ann’s Life Story...
Ann was the youngest of her family and the prettiest (hee hee)...she was the only girl! She grew up to be a beautiful young lady who loved music and dancing.
She was a teacher’s assistant and a Blue Brigade Flagbearer while attending, John Tyler High School. She had many friends and people she stayed in contact with, throughout her many moves.
How their love story began...Jerry was hanging out with a friend, who had Ann on the phone. He stepped away and Jerry picked up the phone and asked Ann on a date! The other guy never had a chance! They were & always have been each other’s forever!
Since Ann loved to dance and Jerry had two left feet, she insisted that he learn. She taught him well and he began to love dancing with her. They would dance anywhere, anytime!
Ann attended Tyler Junior College. She was an Apache Belle and started her accounting journey and became a master of the 10-key! A few years later, Jerry enlisted in the Air Force and they moved to Corsicana, TX.
Eventually, they would move to the Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ. They loved AZ and often told stories of their time there. Ann worked as a civilian switchboard operator for the military. After some time, they moved back to TX...Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX...where Jerry was Honorably Discharged from Active Duty. They moved to Amarillo, TX and Jerry worked on his brother-in-law's farm and attended West Texas State University, on the G.I. Bill, while Ann went to Amarillo College for accounting classes.
It was time to start a family, and Nikki was born in 1976. Eight months later, they moved again and bought 4 County Tractor & Equipment in Memphis, TX and later built a shop in Childress, TX. Jerry, his best friend, Wayne Sweatt and brother-in-law, Larry Womble, created a consulting firm called Ag Resources.
They worked with the Nigerian Government exporting tractors, irrigation equipment, and other farm equipment to Africa. They worked in Africa 4-8 months out of the year for around 7 years.
While this was happening, Ann held down the fort! She ran 4 County Tractor & Equipment, raised Nikki, watched over the livestock, took care of her aging parents and did it with class! She was Nikki’s Girl Scout leader, a sorority member and volunteered.
The story goes that the flock of sheep, which she detested, would find a way to escape the back fence of the property that was adjacent to the Hall County Hospital. The Hospital would call and let Ann know that they were out on the road and on Hospital property.
Ann and Nikki would have to go round them up (at any time of day or night). Ann in her Oldsmobile sedan and Nikki on her 4-wheeler...what a sight! They herded them back home and then; they’d be out again! Jerry heard plenty about it when he returned home!
Ann also was not a big fan of 4 wheelers. Jerry and Nikki loved going to the sand dunes and when she went, you always knew where she was because she kept it in 1st or 2nd gear no matter what!
She liked to paint, enjoyed arts and crafts with Nikki and ceramics & crochet with Meemaw. Some of her paintings are on her celebration table.
When cotton took a turn, they sold the business, packed up and moved, with Meemaw, back to East Texas. Meemaw lived with them before moving into a nursing home.
Ann worked at Gorman McCracken Mazda VW, as the Office Manager, until she began working with Jerry again at Bass (now Peters) Chevrolet. They were together again and for the next 17+ years. They had a great life and bought their favorite home on Trailwood, years later.
They were known for their beautiful landscaping and late-night weeding pulling, until they made that yard immaculate! They threw tons of parties and remodeled that house from top to bottom. They bought a camper and moved it to Lake Fork. They liked to fish and hang out with friends.
Longview TOO Ambucs was Ann’s favorite cause! Her nickname was Ambuc Ann, and she took it seriously! A volunteer for 20-25 years, helped lots of people, held many positions and made lifelong friends.
In 2002, Nikki & Wayne were married and it was an awesome occasion!
While Ann stayed at Peters, Jerry took early retirement, and they bought a farm in Tatum, TX. The family all helped Jerry, and once it looked like he thought it should, it was time to sell.
In 2008, Nikki & Wayne bought a 20-acre property, in Gilmer, TX. Soon, Jerry was supervising and starting to prepare their portion of the property for his & Ann’s new residence. He also finished preparing their beloved home on Trailwood to sell.
Late 2009, their one and only grandbaby was on the way! Polly (named after Meemaw) was the apple of Ann & Jerry’s eyes! They loved being so close and getting to spend so much time with Nikki, Wayne, and Polly.
Ann retired a year later, and Randy Peters gave her a retirement gift that made her so happy...an Alaskan cruise for two! They realized that it would probably be their last big adventure, and they enjoyed every minute of it!
Once Polly started school, Ann and Nikki joined the Harmony ISD PTO. Nikki was President and Ann was Vice President for 2 years. They enjoyed getting to know the students, teachers, staff, all the hustle & bustle and time spent together!
Sadly, Dementia and eventually Parkinson’s took over and she could not do many of things she loved so dearly. Jerry was there by her side through it all, and the family rallied around her and did everything they could to make sure she could live life to the fullest.
In the early years of her illness, she volunteered at the Clothes Closet (Donation & Thrift Store run by their church-First United Methodist Church), in Gilmer, TX. She also was the youngest member of the Senior Ladies Exercise Class, where she made a ton of friends.
She was loved by many and such a cutie pie! Best Wife, Mom and Nana, ever! Can’t you just imagine Ann & Jerry’s reunion in Heaven...
