Our Mother and best friend, Helen Nowlin, 93, of Longview, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017 at a local hospital. She was born August 15, 1923 to Mary Ola and Samuel Carl Newman in Rusk, TX. She attended Spring Hill School, graduating in 1941. She married Carlton C. Nowlin December 23, 1940 in Longview, he preceded her in death in 1998. Mrs. Nowlin owned and operated her beauty shop on Scenic Drive here in Longview for over 60 years. She loved being around the ladies in the shop and being able to share in their lives. She loved to cook and make anything from different crafts to different sugary items. In her opinion, there could never be too much sugar or pecans. She was, however not very good at following directions, so she would take recipes and make them the way she thought was best, or take a pattern for something and complete it the way she saw fit. She was a lover of games, chicken foot, hand & foot or sequins, although she loved to win, but was not very good at losing, and loved to play with her friends at her Primetimers group at her church.
She is survived by her children: Carlis Stone and her husband Jerry of Gladewater, Mary Horrell and her husband Ken of Longview, Carolyn Johnson and her husband Wilmer of Longview, Carl Wesley Nowlin and his wife Rosemary of Gladewater, and Caron Searcy of Longview; grandchildren: Stoney Stone and his wife Michele of Gladewater, Shawn Stone and his wife Bobbie of Gladewater, Denise Weaver and her husband John of Winona, Denna Pillaro and her husband Luke of Louisiana, Stacy Christine of Gladewater, Teri Duggan and her husband Billy of Bossier City, LA, Kelsey Nowlin of Hallsville, Cori Starr and her husband Jake of Diana; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; cousin: Hilda of Corpus Christi; her dog: Suzzy; as well as a great number of nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years; brother: J.C. Newman; sister: Mary Spraggins; grandson: Joel Sullivan; son-in-Law: Bill Searcy.
