Jimmy was raised in Longview, where he attended Pine Tree High School, graduating in 1972. He went on to build a long and dedicated career as an oil pumper with Samson Oil, where he worked faithfully for over 50 years.
In 1995, Jimmy married the love of his life, Debra Lynn “Debby” Downs. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, and family, raising four children.
Jimmy found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. He loved driving his “beautiful bride” around East Texas, camping and boating with family and friends, and traveling to golf tournaments with his son, and he made the BEST pineapple upside-down cake. Celtic Woman was Poppa's music of choice while he slept. Every Sunday morning, you would see Mimi & Poppa at the front doors of Motion Church, greeting everyone who walked in. Known for his generous spirit, he was always ready to lend a helping hand around the house or on your car and was considered the #1 handyman by those who knew him. He enjoyed long trike rides with his beloved dog, Swamp, and never passed up the chance to enjoy his favorite meal—Panchos Mexican food. He loved it so much, his daughter would bring him home chili rellenos by the dozen. Everything he did, he did with a happy and unselfish heart.
He was a hardworking man who took pride in his family, his faith, and the life he built with his wife, Debby. He was a member of the Christian Motorcycle's Association. He was also a Boy Scout Leader, and an assistant golf & soccer coach. He was a faithful member to Motion Church, but above all, he considered his family and his relationship with Jesus his greatest accomplishments.
Jimmy will be remembered as a loving, selfless, hardworking, and funny man of God whose kindness touched countless lives.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Opal and T.L. Downs, and his siblings Mildred, Robert, Ervie, Tommy, and Peggy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra “Debby” Downs; his children, Heidi Downs, Ladonna Thompson and her husband Michael, Jordan McAlister and his wife Kaylee, and Cory McAlister and his wife Gabby; his cherished grandchildren, Kennedy, Destiney, Emerie, Cheyenne, Brianna, Kori, Draven, Keely, and Kaven; and his siblings Brenda, Debra, Betty, and Joe, along with their spouses.
Jimmy’s legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in all who knew and loved him.
