Mary Elaine Townsend

Mary Elaine Townsend, age 85, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026 in Longview, Texas. She was born on December 22, 1940 in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, the second of nine children, to Ora Arestor Mitchell and Nina Lois (Jones) Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester (Ves) Townsend. They married in 1957 and had five children; Debbie Lee Townsend, Mike (Debbie) Townsend, Mark (Kristi) Townsend, Matt (Valerie) Townsend, and Tommy Townsend. While several of her siblings passed away before her, she is survived by a brother, Wayne (Patty) Mitchell, and two sisters, Barbara (Joe) Lingle and Sandy (Garth) Daniels, as well as innumerable grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy.

Elaine was raised in Belmont, Louisiana before moving to Longview, Texas with her family when she was thirteen. After marrying, she also lived in North Carolina, Oregon and spent twenty years in Visalia, California before returning to East Texas in 1991.

As a child, Elaine wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. Though she never achieved that occupation professionally, she was a gifted teacher to the many children she raised and helped raise. As the eldest girl in a large family, she started taking care of children as a mere child herself. Childcare was a natural gift for her. Though her secondary education was limited, she got her GED and pursued formal training in Early Childhood Education at College of the Sequoias. She worked at the daycare centers for Sequoia High School and College of the Sequoias. She started her own licensed daycare out of her home called ET's Daycare. In addition to her client's children, she continued to take care of many family children.

Elaine was very resourceful. As a fulltime stay-at-home mom, she turned household chores into supplemental income by taking in laundry, ironing, mending, and the like. During early adulthood in Longview, she worked a variety of jobs outside the home, including waitressing, working in a garment factory, and department store. After returning to East Texas, she spent many years in payment processing and data entry before eventually retiring from Strategic Fulfillment Group in Big Sandy, Texas.

In her free time, which was rare and minimal, she enjoyed needlecrafts and crocheted beautifully intricate doilies that looked like fine art. She was also an excellent cook and, no matter how short time was, she insisted on making everything from scratch. She remembered everyone's favorite entrée and dessert and they were sure to appear at important milestones and life celebrations.

Her great love was music. She played the piano and loved to tell the story of her grandmother buying her piano lessons by selling a cow. She was a gifted singer, performing for many years in her church choir, including beautiful solo work. She instilled that love for music into all of her children; teaching them to sing and harmonize at a very young age.

Though she never made it to the Swiss Alps in person, her heart was always drawn to their bright, open beauty. She adored the story of Heidi, loved the film The Sound of Music, and held a special place in her heart for the color sky blue. Above all, she carried the mountain-like peace of her favorite scripture, 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances."

Elaine will be remembered most for her greatest accomplishment; the many children whose lives she helped to beautifully mold and shape over eight decades.

The family invites you to celebrate her life at Graveside Services to be held August 1, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Lakeview Funeral Home the evening before from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of East Texas.
