Edina passed peacefully at age 78 after a prolonged illness. She was born in Lebanon to Wilfried and Elizabeth Mommaerts, who were then working at the American University in Beirut. Edina is survived by her two brothers, Robert and Quentin, her two stepsons, Alexander and Nikolas, and her nieces and nephews.
Edina grew up in West Los Angeles after the family moved there in 1956. She attended and graduated from Paul Revere J.H.S., Westlake School, and Scripps College. She then spent some 20 years in New York, in Willow and Woodstock, and then in N.Y. City, before returning to L.A. in 1990 with her husband, the late Richard Weinstein, who became Dean of UCLA’s School of Architecture. Edina opened her own landscape design business where she was an early proponent of the use of native plants in designed landscapes.
Edina pursued a lifelong love of all arts, from literature to film, from music to dance, from paints to prints, from sculpture to architecture and garden design, as well as cooking and vintage clothes. Edina had her own style, and she will be dearly missed.
