On May 19, 1944 he was on the crew of the B-17G #42-31386 "Sky Duster" during a mission to Berlin, Germany. Their airplane was hit in the nose by flak and it blew an engine off, exploded and crashed. Six crew members were killed.
Ernest Roth had been declared missing in action after this incident. Many decades later, on February 2, 2020, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that his remains had finally been positively identified.
