Ethel Galper Hellenthal died peacefully at home on January 25, 2020. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 74 years, Leonard Hellenthal (2018). She is survived by her adoring children: Dr. Ronald Hellenthal (Barbara), Carol Roberts (Larry) and Laura Segura (Sal); grandchildren Karen Barnash (John), Michele Brentano (Matt) and Tracy Roberts; and great-grandchildren Alyssa Ryann, Robert, Norah and Nolan.
Ethel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA in 1943, having majored in Chemistry - one of only two women in her graduating class. She worked as a chemist for a short time, until meeting the handsome young man in uniform who would become the love of her life for the next 74 years.
Ethel was more than happy to forego a career to dedicate her life to raising a family, but she never stopped seeking knowledge or applying her keen intellect wherever she could. With Len ever at her side, she volunteered for over 30 years at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Panorama City, enjoyed camping with the Del Air Rock Club of Studio City, participated in the North Hills Neighborhood Watch and worked many election nights in their precinct. They both cared very much about giving back to their community.
One year ago, Len's memorial was attended by over 100 family members and close friends. Many drove long distances or flew in from out-of-state and Ethel was overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to see and chat with them all. A few weeks ago, after falling ill, she was able to visit with all of her children and grandchildren; a wonderful memory they will always treasure.
Ethel brightened the lives of all who knew her; her absence will be sorely felt by everyone whose lives she touched. In accordance with her wishes no formal services will be held. She will join Len in the Rose Garden at Pierce Brothers Mortuary in West Los Angeles.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Vocational Visions (vocationalvisions.org) where their granddaughter, Tracy, spends her days: 26041 Pala, Mission Viejo, CA 92691, or to the National Teen Leadership Program (ntlp.org), PO Box 6278, Folsom, CA 95763, an organization founded by daughter, Laura, which provides guidance and leadership training to teens.
