

James Rooselvelt Coleman was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the late Walter Coleman and Stella Gardner. He was the only son and the eldest of 3 children.
He moved to California in 1940 and joined the United States Army and served in WWII in the Pacific Theatre where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, after the war he became a warehouse foreman for Naval Supply Center in Oakland, CA until 1950. He was recalled back to the United States Army on September 11, 1950, during the time of the Korean War, he served and occupied in Germany under the 795th Engineer Dump Truck Company. He earned his certification in Mechanic Engineer and Transportation to become a certified automotive mechanic. While serving in Germany he learned how to speak German and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany). He was honorably discharged on February 26, 1956.
He returned to the United States and began working for Co-op Union 76 as a mechanic. In 1963 he met Rose Victorian together they raised their 2 children Christopher and Eva Coleman. He retired from working on cars in 1985 and later moved to Oxnard, Ca in August 1993. He was a man who loved the Lord, his family, and playing dominoes. To many of his friends he was known as JR and one of the best dominoes players. He was a member of Chapter 48 American Legion , and he remained in Southern California until the Lord called him home.
Preceding him in death are his parents Walter and Stella, his siblings Alice Lowe (Eddie) and Pauline Coleman. James Coleman is loved, cherished, and continues to live on through his wife Rose Coleman, Brother- in- Law Howard Victorian and Sister-in-Law Agnes Victorian, his children Christopher Coleman (Blanca), Eva Coleman-Murphy (Roscoe), six grandchildren Stacy, Marquinta, David, Eric, Christopher Jr., Bianca, and six great-grandchildren Richard, Daniel, Varro, Christopher III, Aria, and Allen Jr., and a host of love ones who cherish his memory.
